What should your school do given the need to be compliant from September 5th 2016
The previous two blogs within this series have identified the differences in guidance between July 2015 and September 2016. We have also discussed the approach schools can take to assess the impact of the updated guidance. Since the first draft guidance has been published we have been working to adapt our services to provide schools with an assessment of their compliance with safeguarding and technology requirements. Our technology and safeguarding Health Checks can help you in assessing the effectiveness of your school’s approach to online safety. Within the Health Check we evaluate the ability of your school to reasonably limit children’s exposure to the following risks:
- Content: being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful material
- Contact: being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users
- Conduct: personal online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or causes harm
The report we provide includes an issue log and risk weighted action plan. This provides you with measurable and data driven issues and actions from which to implement an effective approach to online safety.
The safeguarding section is completed at the same time as the rest of our Health Check and includes:
- Logging onto different devices through the user profiles you have and testing the effectiveness of your filtering with specific safeguarding terms
- Identifying any concerns at a software or solution level, documenting these and issuing these to your filtering provider
- Reviewing effectiveness of monitoring software, or assessing the need should there not be any in place
- Review the management processes associated with effective online safety. Including filtering policies, risk profiling of users, notification of concern and training.
- Risk assessment in regards to access to social media
- Effectiveness of HR policies, code of conduct, digital safety policies to discuss and identify any weaknesses and areas for improvement
- A Training session on the same day as the Health Check sandpit, with all leadership ensuring a consistent message is provided
The structure of the ICT and Safeguarding Health Check allows us to take a step back from the everyday pressure of a school community, absorb information from key members of your team, review technology, assess risk and help marry key safeguarding components together, therefore creating a safer online environment and network within your school.
The safeguarding component is provided by leading independent experts in the sector, and who are Honorary Lecturers for the Centre for Child Protection, School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent. Their experience and backgrounds are below:
Teresa Hughes a former police detective working in the Paedophile Online Investigation Team, Teresa has extensive experience of child protection, sex offender management and online safety issues gained across the law enforcement, education, and industry and charity sectors. Teresa coordinated the first Stop It Now! UK & Ireland project funded by the UK Home Office for the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a charity working to reduce the risk of children being sexually abused. Teresa currently provides child safeguarding training and strategy development for various organisations including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Independent Schools Inspectorate. She advises various schools, agencies and organisations, including premier league football clubs, on their safeguarding, policies, procedures and in particular, online awareness. She has particular expertise in the use of preventative and interventionist approaches in lowering the risk of child sexual abuse.
Sharon Girling OBE is a former law enforcement officer with extensive experience in developing and initiating national and international entities responding to child abuse. She initiated the prospect of policing child abuse on the internet in the United Kingdom developing the concept for the national unit the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) where she later worked as an investigator. Sharon now advises various schools, Government bodies, agencies and organisations, including premier league football clubs, on their safeguarding, policies, procedures and online awareness. She assists with investigations in child sexual abuse allegation and is the Assurance Officer for a national fostering agency. Sharon was awarded the OBE for her services to policing.
